Why Words + More

A plethora of materials exists for students in need of reading Intervention and teachers doing their best to use them. Despite good materials and great teachers, many students are still not learning to read. One of the causes is the lack of routine or structure in which to deliver the learning. Every time new materials are used, the child with a poor working memory has to start all over and learn the task. Thus, the Words + More= Reading Success (Words + More) program consists of Lesson Plan ROUTINES. This is the big difference in our program. The routines of the lessons do not change, only the content of each lesson changes.

Not only does the Words + More program focus on phonemic awareness and word patterns, it connects them to reading and writing strategies side-by-side with word study. Later in the program, grammar, sentence structure, and handwriting are included. All this can be done in approximately a thirty-minute time frame for a small group of children.

The teacher has minimal preparation, as the lesson plans are complete in this guide. Each lesson presents the strategies necessary for reading instruction in one place, and yet, lessons are not scripted but allow for dynamic teacher response to the students.

The intention of Words + More is to build a structured system for (1) phonemic awareness, (2) the study of word patterns, and (3) the application of appropriate skills and strategies to decode and comprehend text.
